Welcome to another exciting school year in the Stanwood Camano School District. I am very pleased to begin my 14th year as superintendent of our excellent school district. I hope that one of the most beautiful summers on record finds you rested and ready for a powerful year of learning and growth. Our staff has been working hard to prepare for the new school year and is ready to greet students back to school on September 2nd.

There are many exciting changes that took place over summer and more will continue throughout the upcoming school year. I would like to mention a few highlights.

I am thrilled to announce that we will be providing full day every day kindergarten in all 5 elementary schools. This has been a school board goal for many years and we are fortunate to be able to provide additional local dollars to supplement the unfunded schools, staff, professional development, furniture and supplies. We strongly believe that all of our students will benefit from this jump-start to their education.

Several improvements have been made to our facilities and in technology as a result of our Capital Levy. Stanwood High School got a new roof, outside paint in several areas, gym bleachers, refinished gym floors, carpet in some areas, a new track and renovated bathrooms. Stanwood Elementary got a new roof and outside paint. The Technology Service Group has been involved in many projects that began with the implementation of our virtual desktop infrastructure.  Technicians have finished installing networking equipment in multiple school sites where now three schools are fully operational with new “high speed” Cisco networking gear.  They moved computer servers and peripherals to the new Data Center where they can take advantage of the new higher speed networking equipment and back up power systems. A new phone system was installed at Stanwood Elementary. Additionally, 1.5 technology TOSA’s (teachers on special assignment) were hired to facilitate the work of professional development for the integration of technology in learning and teaching. These are only a few of the projects that were implemented during the summer months. We will continue to keep you informed as we begin the installation of teacher presentation stations and more!

We have begun the process of planning for two ballot measures. First is the renewal of our Replacement Maintenance and Operations Levy, which will be on the ballot spring 2016. We have scheduled many presentations throughout the community and schools to share specific levy facts. Second, the process of planning for a new high school will continue over the next several months. We plan to make a recommendation to the board in the future to place a high school bond on the ballot spring 2017. Our estimates show that these ballot measures, as planned, will not increase our school tax rate.

There is no doubt we have an ambitious agenda before us in the coming year. I could not be more thankful and appreciative of the quality of our staff and the support of our parents and community to make all of this happen and more to better serve our students now and into the future.

May this school year be our best ever!

Jean Shumate, Ed.D.
