DeAnn Larson, Elger Bay Elementary reading specialist, was surprised when her name was announced to receive the Teacher of the Month award for April 2010. The Board of Directors recognized her at the April 20th board meeting. She was nominated by a student and staff members and was selected by a committee of community members and one school district employee. DeAnn has worked for the Stanwood-Camano School District for the past 12 years.
DeAnn has been instrumental in providing
support to fellow staff and crucial to student success. Jessica
Jansma, teacher, said that she always goes above and beyond what is
expected of her and is involved in many of the family oriented
activities as well as taking leadership roles on many committees.
Other co-workers described DeAnn in their nomination as dedicated,
engaging, a volunteer and expert advisor. They said as a reading
facilitator she looks at individual student needs to determine the most
appropriate, yet challenging placement for them and she ensures they
receive appropriate support to establish rigor in their education.
Student Bradie Ferguson said, "She does more than just helping us. She
encourages us to do our best!"
The Teacher of the Month recognition award is given monthly throughout
the school year. Nominations come from parents, staff, students, and
community members. The awards are sponsored by Sterling Savings Bank
and Lenz Enterprises, in partnership with Dos Reales and Stanwood
