julie_knight_-_october_tom_5-edited2.jpgJulie Knight thought Wednesday would be a normal day as the reading specialist at Utsalady Elementary School. She was stunned when Stanwood-Camano staff showed up to honor her as the first "Stanwood-Camano Teacher of the Month."

The Teacher of the Month award recipient is chosen by a committee of community members and one school district employee who review nominations submitted by parents, school employees, students, and community members. Julie's nomination described her as an experienced, caring teacher who understands how students think, feel and learn. "Parents of Utsalady students tell us that our school has a warm, welcoming feel to it. Julie has a great deal to do with making Utsalady a happy place for students and staff alike."

Julie is a leader at Utsalady Elementary. Not only does she serve on the school's leadership team, but Julie encourages students to keep good attendance in school with a unique treat. When a class has earned perfect attendance, Julie visits their class with a CD player, a bag of colorful socks, and a hamburger hat on her head to "get the party started with one of her famous sock dances to celebrate their accomplishment."

The Teacher of the Month award will be given monthly during the school year thanks to a partnership between the Stanwood-Camano School District and the local Sterling Savings Bank. Each winner will be recognized in front of the School Board and will receive a $50.00 gift card to a local restaurant and two movie passes.

Julie will be recognized as the October Teacher of the Month at the October 21, 2008 School Board meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the Stanwood-Camano School District Administration and Resource Center.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
