Deven Rekdal, 3rd grade student at Stanwood Elementary (pictured at left) and Jeremiah Borsum, senior at Stanwood High School (pictured at right) received the Board of Directors' SHINING STAR award at the Stanwood-Camano School District's Board of Directors' meeting on January 19, 2010.
The Shining Star is awarded to selected
students, elementary through
high school, that have demonstrated outstanding achievement, continuous
improvement, or have overcome challenges.
The award program is sponsored by Sterling Savings Bank (Stanwood
Branch) and Lenz Enterprises in partnership with Stanwood Cinemas and
Stanwood Elementary principal, Victor Hanzeli,
Megan Ovenell, 3rd grade teacher, and Randi Bachand, resource teacher,
each recognized Deven Rekdal for his courage and perseverance. Deven
just returned to school after recuperating from heart transplant
surgery. He is a good student in the classroom, has a pleasant
personality, and is an inspiration to others, they said, and he is
already setting a personal goal of running faster than his friend.
Jeremiah Borsum was honored by Darryl Main, teacher for the
agriculture/mechanics program at Stanwood High School. Jeremiah serves
as a student assistant for Mr. Main during first period class. He
praised Jeremiah for his organizational skills, knowledge of subject
matter, and leadership. Mr. Main said that he always stives to be the best that he can be.
Board members presented each of the Shining
Stars with certificates of achievement and their congratulations. Mike
Gibson, manager of Sterling Savings Bank, presented Hollywood Video
gift baskets and Stanwood Cinemas movie passes to the recipients.
